Legal Precedents and Policy Influence

The subcommittee’s work in the area also demonstrated the expanding influence in shaping national conservation policy. By reviewing environmental impact assessments and contributing to policy consultations, WNPS ensured that the legal dimensions of conservation were rooted in science and transparency.

In the Mannar Wind Power Project case, WNPS challenged the assumption that renewable energy projects are inherently sustainable without adequate environmental safeguards. The Society’s submissions revealed significant flaws in the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment, a lack of community consultation, and the potential long-term impact on migratory birds and marine habitats. The eventual decision by the government to reconsider its approval marked a major milestone for conservation advocacy, establishing that even well-intentioned projects must meet the highest environmental standards.

Beyond litigation, the Subcommittee also contributed to national policy formulation. With its feedback on the proposed National Biodiversity Policy, WNPS emphasized the need for robust legal frameworks that integrate scientific evidence and uphold the rights of future generations. By engaging constructively with policymakers and the public, the Legal Subcommittee continued to shape an informed and accountable conservation agenda for Sri Lanka.
