Empowering Youth Leadership for Climate Action (YLCA)

The Youth Leadership for Climate Action (YLCA) project, delivered in partnership with the British Council, stands as a significant milestone in the WNPS Youth Wing’s mission to equip young people with the tools to lead Sri Lanka’s response to climate change. First launched in 2022, this initiative is designed to train youth aged 18 to 29 to develop and lead sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient interventions within their communities. By fostering youth leadership and environmental awareness, the YLCA project strengthens climate literacy while driving grassroots action across vulnerable districts.

Since its inception, YLCA has trained over 120 Climate Community Leaders across Sri Lanka and successfully implemented more than 30 climate intervention projects. These youth-led solutions span five key districts—Kandy, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura, and Nuwara Eliya—addressing urgent environmental issues such as water management, reforestation, climate adaptation, and urban greening. Each intervention is tailored to local needs, allowing young leaders to apply context-specific strategies to enhance environmental resilience.

In 2025, the project continues to evolve with new climate-adaptive pilot initiatives across Kalutara and Nuwara Eliya. In Kalutara, Project Green Shade targets the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect by expanding green cover in urban areas. Through a coordinated planting program involving green walls and free-standing plants in schools, hotels, and public spaces, the initiative aims to reduce urban temperatures while improving the aesthetic and ecological value of the district’s built environment.

In Ratnapura, the Climate Challenge Project addresses critical water and sanitation issues that worsen during flood seasons. As part of this effort, the Youth Wing is constructing rainwater harvesting tanks and groundwater recharge systems to ensure year-round access to clean and sustainable water. A single completed tank is estimated to benefit over 1,000 individuals, offering a scalable model for community-based climate adaptation.

Meanwhile, in Nuwara Eliya, the focus is on restoring fragile ecosystems through tree planting and reforestation. To plant and nurture 10,000 native and endemic trees along the Maskeli-Oya river, this initiative engages over 150 school children, tea estate workers, and local communities, fostering both environmental stewardship and long-term resilience against climate shocks. The reforestation project also contributes to biodiversity conservation and the long-term preservation of highland habitats.
